Why does ASH WARE no longer ship a floppy
disk or CD-ROM?
ASH WARE deploys all software directly from the Web.
Why did ASH WARE decide to only support
Web software deployment?
The answer to this question is rather complicated. A number
of factors contributed to this decision. First and foremost
is that our previous software delivery schemes were complicated, time
consuming, slow, and of poor quality. We had too many separate
utilities that we had gradually created over the years that performed
the following tasks:
- Software release
- Floppy Disk generation
- Software installation (full license from Web)
- Software installation (full license from floppy)
- Software installation (demo license from floppy)
- Software installation (demo license from Web)
- Software installation ("Microcoding For Beginners" book
license from CD-ROM)
- Software upgrade from Web
With MtDt we completely redesigned our software delivery tools.
We felt that a single Web-centric software deployment scheme offered
the best balance of capabilities and efficiency. This offers
the following advantages:
- Off-shore customers would no longer have to wait weeks while the
software clears customs.
- All customers can download software upgrades and patches as soon
as these are available.
- Customers will no longer receive floppies or CD-ROMs that had
been damaged in transit.
- Customers will no longer have to worry about losing, misplacing,
or damaging their installation floppies.
Are there problems with the Web software
delivery scheme?
Yes, but none are critical. With our new MtDt software delivery
scheme we have experienced a number of problems and customer complaints.
While there are limitations to what we can do we are committed to
addressing all of our customer's concerns. We see the following
as key issues.
- Customers need to send us their license files
- ASH WARE must find a way to associate the purchase order or invoice
number with the license files received from large companies that
place multiple small orders.
Note that none of these problems prevent the proper installation
of ASH WARE software on your computer. Rather, these are nuisance
problems that are procedural in nature. We plan on fixing all
problems in the very near future and respectfully request your patience
while we do so.
When I send you my license file, what information
is contained in this file?
The following things are contained in this file.
- Your computer has a key that our software requires in order to
run in its fully functional, fully licensed mode. The license file
contains an encrypted version of this key. The 50 random-appearing
numbers at the bottom of the file is the key plus your invoice and
license number in an encrypted form.
- For licensed users we inject information from the purchase order
into your executable file. This information is found at the
top of the license file as regular ASCII text.
Here at ASH WARE when we receive your license file we add your email
address to this file. We do this so that we so that we could
(theoretically) notify you when your license is about to expire.
But we do not add you to one of our email lists automatically.
Instead, we only add you to one of our email lists if you specifically
request us to do so.
If I email you my license file will I start
receiving junk mail?
No. Here at ASH WARE we would like to have a desert island
reserved for slammers. What we would do to these evil people
is contrary to our Judeo-Christian upbringings so we will expand on
our thoughts here. . .
When you email us we will never divulge this information outside
of ASH WARE. Never, never, never.
How do I move my software from one
computer to another?
Basically it is the same procedure as the initial installation.
Please do the following.
- Note the purchase order number, invoice number, and license number
of the software of the software on the old computer.
- Install a demo version of the software on your new computer.
- Email us the license file along with the invoice number, purchase
order number, and license number, if available.
- ASH WARE will remove your old computer, and add your new computer
to our installation database and re-post the installation utility.
- ASH WARE will send you an email indicating that the installation
utility is available.
- Download and install again the installation utility. A fully
functional installation of your software will occur!
